hi all

the lovely wifes gal 98 110tdi has just done 3000 miles this year not a lot but it runs on 10/40 semi synthectic would one oil and filter change a year be enough for this piddling amount of miles or because of lack of use it gets 6 runs of 100 miles the rest is shops and school should i do 2 times a year.

thanks all and dont forget you get discount in my shop My Webshop

Personally I have always changed the oil twice a year regardless. Our Galaxy does about 8,000 miles a year.

Oil is getting better and better - good oils should easily last the year or longer - but for the sake of 'a few quid' I do oil and filter twice a year. It also means I get to have a good look under the car at the same time, as it goes up on the ramps.

And the cam chain gets to run in nice, clean oil!

do what it says in the manual.

anything more is wasting money

anything less is silly.

but, remember to follow the notes about arduous service

OK, your opinion, and I respect that.

But if you want your engine to exceed its design life you might want to exceed the service schedule.

out of interest I wonder what its design life is ??

Bearing in mind that this engine is also used in commercial vehicles then can I ask where you got the figure from?

I ran a nissan primera (94) into the ground.

at 195000 miles, the cost of replacing tyres/windows/suspensions/cv joints etv

became prohibative and it had to be scrapped.

the engine was however in pristine condition and yet the oil and filters were changed as per book.

My 84' Cavalier was a different kettle, with the car fine but the bottom end completely buggered at 90000miles

here's the point.

I have never heard of a modern engine wearing out, ever

taxis, maybe,go for 3-400 thou.

long before that, everything else will fall off.

I don't have anything to add to the above, but have known people in a Vauxhall performance car club I was a member of change their oil at silly low intervals thinking they were being nice to the engine's internals. I did a similar calculation then and came to the same conclusion, that they were throwing cash away.

Personally I would consider oil change frequency of every 3k miles / twice yearly excessive but subject to type of driving and conditions.

I would aim to change both our petrol and diesel every 6k / once yearly, whichever comes first.

I would agree with Irv Gordon's tips here Irv Gordon

Well yes, I do know about modern oils and yes I could also list out all the cars I have owned and the intergalactic milages, if I could be bothered.

My oil changes cost
